Bracketing settings?

Hi all,
I went on this great photo meetup this last weekend and got to shoot a beautiful sunrise over a river. I tried setting up automatic bracketing, but couldn't seem to get it right. There always seems to be something that wasn't mentioned that needs to be set or chosen, even when I look in books or on line.
I will be going to Yosemite for just a day trip in a week and want to make sure I get the shot I want. Can someone give me pointers on using bracketing with the 60D?
