Can't change settings after taking a picture in advanced mode

Many times when I'm in Shutter Priority or Aperture Priority, after I take a picture, the on-screen options are grayed-out and I cannot change them. The only way to make this go away is to either switch to another mode and switch back or to take two or three more pictures with the current settings. After that, the options are black again and I am able to change them. Any idea what's going on?
