Can I not use my d3100 without an sd card?

Howdy Moose. I'm new to cameras. Just got my D3100 in today. It is refurbished from Nikon and didn't come with an sd card. I went to the guide mode to shoot, and it goes to a screen that I can't do anything from. On a video I watched its supposed to go to a screen that says "easy operation", "advanced operation", or "use a timer / quiet shutter". Please help me.
