Nighttime photography

Hey thanks for a great site! I am interested in nighttime photography, especially of the night sky. Was wanting to know some general settings for taking pictures without a telescope (which I have done with my old point and shoot); just a tripod, my camera and the sky. I want to take some timelapse at some point, and there are many tutorials for that, but I need some general settings for just taking pictures of the stars, moon and sky with the kit lens that came with my camera. I am having trouble with exposure settings in any mode. The camera says "subject too dark". I am so excited to have my D5100 and appreciate any help with this. Thanks!
