Depends on what you want to shoot with it. You could get good shots from a 35mm or 50mm f1.8 if you can be close enough. After that you are looking at a large jump in price, unless you buy pre owned then the best maybe nearly as expensive as new.
I have my eyes on the Nikkor 35mm f1.8 AF-S DX for my D5100. I have not used it yet, but it gets great reviews. It's not quite wide enough for what I really want, but being a DX format, I can't complain too much. The 35mm is only $200 new, large aperture for the selective focus I like, and autofocus can make life easier once in a while.
