Dark (black) photos when using 'S' mode

edited May 2012 Posted in » Nikon D5100 Forum
When taking photos in 'S' mode, my photos turn out black. I've played around the the settings, but it hasn't changed anything. All photos I snap are just black with no light coming through. Yes, I have the lens cap off. :-)

I'm currently using the Nikon D5100 with AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm. Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.

  • Howdy @msaenz - When your photos turn out "black" it means they're underexposed. To get a proper exposure, you'll need to either manually turn up the ISO and/or lower the shutter speed.

The ISO will increase the image sensors sensitivity to light which will allow you to use faster shutter speeds. However, the higher the ISO the more image noise (grain) you'll see in your shots.

If you don't want to mess around with ISO, just set it to Auto inside the Menu under ISO sensitivity settings. You can set the maximum ISO value for the D5100 to select. Hope that all makes sense and happy shooting! :)
