upgrading my kit lens

I have the 18-55mm and I'm looking to upgrade my lens. I use it for everyday photography but I want something with a little better quality and a little more zooming capability. I am open to canon or Tamron lenses. My budget is about $300-$400.

My husband just bought me the camera for Mother's Day and he bought an additional lens too, the Canon 75-300mm. For a beginner, I was wondering if that was the right addition for me. I'm worried because it doesn't have the IS like the 55-250mm lens.

I'm interested to hear what Moose has to say about a recommendation for an additional lens as well. Sorry for joining in on your question, but I'm in the same boat!
