I am new to DSLR cameras, and would like to know which is the the best cheapest prime lens for the D3100.

Although it won't autofocus on the 3100- I use an AF Nikkor 50mm 1.8 lens. Fantastic speed, great optics, and you can generally find clean used ones for under 100 bucks.
