Button Marking Fading

Hi there, I've recently upgraded to a Nikon D3100 from my trusty D40. It's actually from my son so I know it has been looked after. It was only bought last year but the 12 month warranty is now up. The camera is great but it's very disapointing that the markings are fading off the buttons on the back down the left hand side. Does any one know what can be done? The buttons on my old D40 are still marked properly as if it is new and its three years old.
