The best thing you can do is READ THE MANUAL! Seriously, it contains a lot of good info. The next best thing is EXPERIMENT! You can't mess anything up by changing settings on the camera, and if you take a crap picture, just delete it, but not before you make a note of why the picture was crap. Was it out of focus? No depth of field? Over/underexposed? I like to bracket my shots; that is adjust f-stop on either side of the recommended exposure. Usually you'll get a more dramatic effect this way. Have fun!
