Need help in making choice on purchasing new lens

I recently bought my first DSLR camera, a Nikon D5100 and 40mm F/2.8G lens. I'm now looking to purchase the my next lens that would cost around $500. I did a little research and found 2 types of lenses I want to purchase, but I can only buy one. Lens number one is the new prime lens 85mm f/1.8G costing $500. Lens number 2 is a Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G telephoto costing $589 from Amazon. I like to take portrait and landscape photos. My question is what would be my next ideal choice for my situation?

Well that would depend, since you have the 40mm that would already be decent for portraits and maybe macro shots, but the 70-300mm would give you great range for landscapes and outdoors shots. What kind of pictures do you take most?
