Best settings and lenses for graduation shots

I'm new to the Nikon D5100 and was wondering which settings and lenses would be best for capturing shots of a graduation?

@dyboy - Which lenses do you currently own? Will most of your shots be at a distance from the stage, or will you be able to get within close proximity? If outdoors, what time of day will the graduation take place? This will better help me point you in the right direction. :)
