Exposure Indicator Vanishes

I've noticed that the exposure indicator (the horizontal bar with notches between + 0 -) sometimes vanishes on my D3100. This seems to happen across various automatic and manual modes. Any idea why this is happening? It is frustrating as it means I cannot tell if my setup is going to under/overexpose my shot. Thanks!

Thanks Landon. I think this is happening in certain modes because the camera is detecting a good (zero) exposure, so hides the meter. If I adjust one of the exposure values (shutter speed, aperture or ISO) to a point where the image would be under/overexposed, the meter appears again. So I think that may be the answer.
