Howdy @chuck - The newly announced Nikon Micro 40mm f/2.8G (see here) looks to be a promising macro lens under the $300 mark. Otherwise, I'd go with the 50mm f/1.8G and couple it with a Raynox DCR-250 macro adapter.
Exactly how close would you have to get to your subject with the Raynox DCR-250? I read another thread on here where that was mentioned, and am very curious.
@rallyshark - It depends on the lens you attach it to and the current focal length you're using...generally speaking, within a few inches of the subject.
