Menu and "i" display

This is probably a silly question, but I'm very new to photography and the D5300. When I hit the menu or "i" buttons, should I be able to see those menus in the viewfinder, or are they only visible on the LCD screen? Thanks to anyone who can help.

    Only the LCD screen. The viewfinder is a true optical one and thus cannot display information except for the band below the image, and the little bit of AF info that is overlaid on the image.
