Red square on my screen

Can anybody help me remove the annoying red square on my screen?

Which screen is in question here?

The AF point illuminates as a red dot in the viewfinder, and as a red square in Live View (which turns green when focus is achieved). I'm aware of no way to get rid of this. The placement of the AF point is also that of the spot metering point, so even in manual focus it remains in view.
