Is there a way to quickly zoom in the subject matter without doing it manually?

No. The [+] button only zooms the image in playback. There is no digital zoom function in these cameras, and the lenses do not power zoom.

Remember that "digital zoom" is really just cropping, so if it did do this, it would decrease pixel density. By the same token, you can accomplish exactly the same thing by cropping an image in post processing.
