Hi, I've been looking into purchasing the Nikon 50mm f/1.8G or the 50mm f/1.4G lens to use with my D5300. The f/1.4G is almost double the price as the f/1.8G. Anyone have a recommendation to go with between the two?
Most reviews I've seen suggest that the f/1.8 is often better than the f/1.4, especially at the wide-open end, and though the f/1.4 is undoubtedly nicer made, the f/1.8 seems the better overall bargain. Among other things, its recessed front element makes it more flare resistant without a hood, which makes it more compact.
If you read up on the web I think you'll find a number of reputable reviewers who suggest the f/1.8 is not only the better bargain but in some ways the equal or better lens. With the $200 or so difference, you could throw in a 35mm f/1.8 DX normal lens and still have some left over.
In the disclosure department, though, I should add that I do not have either of these lenses, shooting mostly manual when not traveling with the kit zooms.
