I would read the manual first. Most such manuals have a "quick start" portion that tells you the minimum of what to do to get the thing going and make some pictures. Do that first to make sure it's all working properly. Formatting the memory card and getting the battery fully charged will probably be at the top of the list. Then start figuring out which settings you want to change. That part may depend on how experienced you are, and on what you have become accustomed to in previous cameras.
