Off Camera Flash

I'm having trouble getting my speed light to flash. I want to use my 600ex-rt off camera as a slave. Do I need a transmitter, or can the built in flash work as the master?

I have used my Canon spedlite 430EX as a slave, so the built in one does function as the master, but I believe the setup only works in creative mode. Hope that answers your question.
