Reading up on this, it appears that the slave operation of this flash is not purely optical, and it requires a radio signal from a Canon flash or camera rather than a generic optical trigger. However, I do see that Yongnuo makes a radio trigger that may work. The down side is that that trigger alone costs about a hundred bucks. I assume that for any such operation the flash would be used in manual mode.
The other option would be to mount the flash on an optical slave unit and have that unit fire it (I am assuming manual mode only again), thus not relying at all on its own slave capabilities. From what I've read, that may or may not work on this flash, though.
