18-135mm versus 55-250mm lens

I am a new and thinking of buying a Canon T3i. I am not sure which lens to buy between the 18-135mm or 55-250mm. I'd mostly click pictures of subjects. Please suggest something.

If you mainly photograph people then the 18-135mm would be better. However, also consider "the nifty fifty" or a 35mm fast lens.

If you are starting with one lens, of those two stick to the 18-135mm, or you'll find you have too little width for normal use. Later if you want something with more telephoto range, you can add it. The 50mm or 35mm fast lens is a good idea too, but it helps to live with the zoom for a while to see which length suits you better.
