Best lens for shallow depth of field while shooting video

I just got the D3100 kit lens and I primarily shoot video at reasonably close quarters, but I want to shoot a film with very shallow depth of field. What's the best lens to get?

    Nikon 50mm f/1.8D - under $100, manual focus (better for filming than the G version) and one third of the price.

    Would this be a better option than a 35mm?
