35mm lens and backing up

Question was asked if a 35mm was good for landscape, and someone said if you can back up enough for it. From 1000 yards in the Alps where do you back up enough or why back up at all? It doesn't make sense to back up if you have to enlarge to get the same shot as a 400mm lens, right?

I think that person was joking. 35mm is perfect for landscapes as long as you realize that on your camera it would give the same angle of view as a 52mm on a full frame.
