Sigma and Nikkor Lenses

I am looking at both Sigma and Nikkor lenses for my Nikon D5100. How do I know if they will be fully functional with my camera body? I have done a lot of research and I thought Sigma lenses needed to be HSM and Nikkor AF-S, but I am not 100% sure and I don't want to purchase something that will not work. I have been looking to purchase from ebay.

    To be clear, all F-mount lenses work on the D5100. If you want to autofocus, that's when you'll need Nikkor AF-S and Sigma HSM lenses or any other F-mount lens with a built-in focusing motor.
