Spots on Photos

edited August 2013 Posted in » General Discussion
Hi there. Yesterday for the first time I took some night shots (long exposure) and I noticed some dots or spots on my photos. I don't know if it's the camera fault, glare or flare from lights. Can someone tell me what they are? Please don t judge my photos, as these are the bad ones. :) Also, in other photos, I see no dots or spots. Thank you.

Below are some examples. The spots are on the sky:

    Hi @Chedyus,

Looks like UFO's to me. Seriously though, check each end of the lens you used for grease marks. If the lens is clean, follow the instructions in your manual to perform a sensor clean. When the mirror has swung up out of the way, you should be able to examine the sensor for grease spots.

Dead pixels usually show as points of white, but the marks on your shots look smeared. Also, as they seem to be roughly in the same place on each of your photos, I would suspect grease marks.

    Regards, PBked
  • @Chedyus - Just curious, is a filter attached to your lens?

@moose, yes, a UV filter. Should I take it off?
  • @Chedyus - Yes, I would take it off. When using a filter at night, city lights (cars, buildings, signs, etc...) tend to cause strange light artifacts and lens flare. I bet once you remove it, those "UFO's" as @PBked put it, will disappear. All the best! :)
