Lens for Newborn Photography

I am looking for the best lens to do infant/newborn photography. I know the aperture is important, so I'm looking at the 35mm f/1.4, but I'm not sure why it has been suggested to me. I want a super clean and clear baby with an awesome blanket fade. I'm working with my kit 18-55mm lens and I'm having a hard time getting the blur I'm looking for. Any knowledge and advise is appreciated!!

I've also heard either the 35mm (in small spaces and kids) or the 50mm (for a little bigger space). I also want to start child photos, but I need those lenses first. Looking for his suggestions for those lenses and why.
