Cannon 50mm f/1.8 vs Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 for Portraits

edited June 2013 Posted in » Canon Lens Talk
I'm going to take my daughter's engagement pictures in a couple of weeks. I know both of these Canon lenses are excellent, but which one would be better? I would need to rent the 24-70mm f/2.8 since I do not have one just yet. Thank you.

The f/1.8 performs better in low light but it doesn't have a very wide angle. The f/2.8 has a fairly wide aperture and the versatility of being a zoom (24-70mm = 38-112mm on a 1.6 crop factor camera).
It is up to you really, but given the choice I would go for the nifty fifty f/1.8 to buy and rent the f/2.8 unless you win the lottery before then.
    Best regards, PBked
