Beach Shoot with White Background Issue

edited May 2013 Posted in » Nikon D3100 Forum
Today I went to the beach and was taking pictures of my girlfriend when I noticed the background was all whited out. How can I take good pictures with the background not so whited out? Should I lower the shutter speed? I think I read somewhere about a filter, but I'm not sure. If someone could tell me I would appreciate it a lot.

  • Sounds like you exposed properly for your girlfriend's face, but overexposed the sky. Next time make sure you are using the matrix metering setting for exposure and consider under exposing the scene by about -2/3 EV and then lighten up your girlfriend's face later using software.

I need to learn to under expose on the EV. That's something I don't do. Thanks!
