Can you overcharge or burn up the battery?

With my older Nikon I would just leave the battery in the charger on the wall until I was ready to use it. I recently purchased the Nikon D3100 and it appears that both of my new batteries are not charging. I feel that it could possibly be because I allowed them to charge too long, or perhaps the charger itself is fried. Does anyone have any advise? Whenever I insert the recently charged battery I get an error message saying something about shutter release because battery life is to low. Also, is there a way I can reset this camera back to its original settings? What do you use to clean the lenses on your camera ? Thanks

Also, I just read on another forum that there are only certain sd cards that work with this camera and with others there is a power issue. Could you provide me with links of the card that you suggest for this camera? I am willing to buy a new card to see if this is the problem. The card I am using is just the standard sd card 4.
