Settings for Beach Vacation

I'm a beginner when it comes to DSLR cameras. My mother gave me a new Nikon D5100 so we can use it our beach vacation, but I don't have even the slightest clue on what settings I should use. Should I just use the auto function? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Howdy @ponpon - Which lenses do you own? Will the majority of your shots be outdoors during the day? This will help me narrow down some settings to try out. Happy shooting! :)
