Issues Recording Audio Using an External Mic

I recently purchased the Nikon D5100 along with a Shenggu SG-108 Microphone (cheap ebay mic) and I've been having trouble getting it to work. I used this video (see below) to help me set it up, but it still doesn't seem to work after following it step by step.


I'm not sure if the battery it came with is flat, or if there's a problem with the settings in the camera. The microphone setting is set to Auto sensitivity, but no audio records.

I'm totally lost, so suggestions would be much appreciated. I'm hoping I've just missed something obvious and I don't have to send it back.

    Howdy @EmilyEmber - I can't speak specifically to the microphone you're using, but have you tried the other Microphone sensitivity options?
