Umbrella or Softbox?

I want to shoot indoor portraits and groups with my Nikon D3100 using a speedlight. Which one is better, an umbrella or a softbox?

    How many will be in the group? Personally I'll use a white reflective umbrella and not a shoot through. That way more light will spread evenly. If your shooting 8+ in the group I would use two lights as the one will not give you even lighting. The further back you go to spread the light, the more power you will need. So another one will help greatly.
