I recently purchased my Nikon D5100 and I'm very interested in getting into pet photography. The only lens I have is the 18-55mm which came with the camera. Could anyone recommend any other lenses that would be suitable for pets? Thanks in advance!
Howdy @ellywelch - I would go for the Nikon 35mm f/1.8. This particular lens is very good indoors (low light). When compared to your kit lens, you'll be able to get faster shutter speeds at lower ISO's in low light which basically means you'll get sharper shots with less image noise.
The super bright f/1.8 aperture will also give you a very shallow depth of field, giving you the ability to put your pet in focus and throw everything else into a blurry oblivion. Welcome to the forum and happy shooting!
I agree with what Moose suggested. With pets, it's always better to use natural light than have to use the flash; so the faster the lens the better for pet photography.
