Settings for the Sunset Over the Beach

edited January 2013 Posted in » Nikon D3100 Forum
Hey all, Im off for a team outing for a few days and I'm planning to capture the beautiful sunset with my D3100. Can you advise which is the best lens for it and also the best settings to use. I dont want to miss this. If I keep practicing then I'm going to miss the sunset, so I don't want to take the risk. Please note the sunset is on the beach, so the water adds a lot of value. Please advise asap.

I have a prime lens, kit lens and a telephoto lens. I got them all recently.
  • Hi Nigel,

I would suggest turning Auto White Balance off & setting colour temp to 3000 in Menu.
You can just set to Program for shutter & aperture or manually set shutter (S) if image is washing out when sun too high above horizon.
For lens I use the standard 18-55mm, but if you want the sun to dominate shot use 55-200/300 kit lens.

A graduated neutral density filter can be helpful in this situation.
A grad filter has half the filter shaded and the other half clear.
The filter is screwed into the front of the lens and rotated into the proper position.

I have one and it comes in handy for sunrises and sunsets.
