Zoom Lens for Outdoor Sports

Hello everyone! I have a Nikon D3100 and I've been thinking about getting another lens. I currently have the kit lens 18-55mm. I like taking landscape pictures and night pictures right now but I'm going to be needing a zoom lens for out door sports. Any suggestions?

On the higher end is Nikon's New 70-200mm fixed f/4:

Probably the most common telephoto zoom addition for D3100 owners is Nikon's 70-200mm f/4-5.6 (or the 70-300mm):

The 70-200mm will kill your bank account. Nikkor 70-300mm and Tamron 70-300mm are great, even for sports, if you know how to use them. Don't try to catch the fastest action. For example, in soccer, I take photos of the freekick giver just before he starts kicking and then I try to capture the actual kick.

Those 70-300mm lenses are seriously sharp. I had 55-200mm VR which is decent glass too, but no match for 70-300mm. Just remember they're heavy and big. For me it is a good thing to hold them more balanced at 300mm. Go check flickr for photos.

There are also fast primes that you should look into.
