Christmas Photos Indoor

I have someone who wants me to take photos of their children for their Christmas card. They want the kids in front of the tree with the lights on. Will I be able to get great shots in auto mode? I have been reading about aperture and shutter speed, but I am still pretty lost. Also, the photos are going to be at night. Any tips or suggestions?

Use the P setting. Push the flash button so you can use the flash to fill.
