Focusing Through a Fence

How can I focus on a building through a fence? I would be using manual mode setting on the camera. Can I focus without using manual focus? I use a 55-300 mm lens.

In A, S or P mode (M as well, but since you're asking this question I would say M isn't the mode to use yet) you can move the focus point. Frame your shot and make sure the focus point is on the building not on a fence board or wire etc.
