How to adjust the recording volume when shooting movies?

I often shoot movies of bands in bars and the result every time is a distorted sound. Can you adjust the recording volume of the mic on the D3100 and if so, how can I do this?

    I'm not an avid fan using the camera for shooting movies. I can't say if it does have a volume control, but I can say I've never seen an option for it. The D5100 is more suited for shooting movies as you can buy an external mic for it.
