Subject is too Dark

This is killing me with frustration! In easy terms, how do I extend the exposure time? I want to photograph the night sky, but I keep getting the message "subject is to dark". I am using a tripod and the camera has an AFS Nikkor 35mm 1.1.8G lens fitted. I do get great results shooting cityscapes in the dark. Which buttons do I push and which thumbwheel do I turn? Help!

  • Turn the dial to M or S then use the thumb dial to select a speed. That will increase your exposure time.
