Using Old DSLR Lenses On A D3100

I am getting back into photography from 35mm work from years back. My DSLR was a Yashica and I have a number of lenses from way back then. I bought a manual adapter so I can get the lenses to fit the D3100 body. I'm on manual priority and the shutter operates, but no photo. Am I doing something wrong or is just not possible to take pics using my old lenses and the body adapter?

Don't give up the hope of using your old lenses yet. I am using lenses from my old 35mm camera on my D3100. I don't need an adapter as they are all K-mount and I shoot totally manual with no problems. I'd visit my local camera store with the body, adapter and lense before giving up.
