Lens Help

edited October 2012 Posted in » Nikon D3100 Forum
My partner bought this lens for my birthday from a famous auction site:
Nikon DX Zoom Nikkor 55-200mm f/4.0-5.6 AF-S G Lens

Will it fit my D3100? This is all new territory for me as I have upgraded from a bridge. Any advice would be most welcome.

Thank you.

    Hi Maureen,
Yes the lens will work with the D3100.

For future reference if you like auto focus you will need to look for AF-S in the title of the lens.
DX lenses are designed for cropped sensors.
This doesn't mean you have to stick with them though.

Now I've become confused. The name of the lens I have is AF-S DX VR Zoom Nikkor 55-200mm, f/4-5.6 IF-ED.
Can someone please explain the difference between mine and Maureen's? Thanks!

Nikon has two lenses that are 55-200mm; one is the f/4-5.6G ED AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor and the other is the f/4-5.6 AF-S VR DX Zoom-Nikkor.

They are both the same focal distances but have slightly different elements. Both have ED elements but one has two and the other has one.

Cindi, your lens has one ED Element and has VR (virbration reduction), while the other lens has 2 ED Elements and no VR.

    Regards.
