I have never owned any previous cameras and I have absolutely no knowledge of any cameras at all. I recently bought a Canon 60D and I am having some trouble with it. The lens I bought (don't ask me why) was a Nikon AF-S DX 3,5-5,6/18-55 G VR. Not knowing a Nikon lens wouldn't work on a Canon camera, I then found out I needed an adaptor. So I bought a Fotodiox Nikon to Canon adaptor and it all fits perfectly well; creates an image and everything. But the problem is the image is really, really dark. Now I don't know the extent of my inexperience, whether it's a simple push of a button, or the lens or the adaptor causing the problem. I could really use some help, and it would be greatly appreciated. I'm completely in the dark here, pun intended. Thanks, Jack.

For a noob I suggest trying to pick up a second hand Cannon EF 17-85mm lens. It's sold as the kit lens with the 60D body for a good reason; it's a good all rounder. Also there seems to be quite a few of them available second hand.
As to why things are darker I had a look at this: http://fotodioxpro.com/index.php/nikon-f-to-canon-eos-lens-mount-adapter-v2-type-2.html
When you use it, the built in metering you have on the camera won't work properly. You would need to close down the aperture for the camera to meter properly.
You could meter manually, but that's a lot of work.
Best of luck.
