D3100 features

edited August 2012 Posted in » Nikon D3100 Forum
Hi, I've just bought a Nikon D3100 and I' ve been told that you can focus on certain things in a photo while keeping their color and make the rest of the photo (background) black and white. For example flowers in a vase on a table: the flowers keep their color and the rest of the image is black and white. I hope someone can figure out what I'm trying to ask and tell me if and how I can do that. Thanks.

I've had my D3100 for some time and would be very surprised if there was a function that could do that in a camera. I know my way around quite well, but to do a Halftone image you need to use editing software.

With that being said there is something that you might be able to do.

The D3100 has a function called image overlay; technically you could make image halftone but it wouldn't be a natural shot. For example, take a picture of a vase with colorful flowers in-front of a white screen. Step two would be moving the same vase or another object in a different position then taking a black and white picture. Step three, use image overlay in the camera to combine the images together and your final image should be halftone, I think.

I may be completely wrong. Anyway hope this has helped.

Arcadian, you asked the same question that I've also wanted to. So, if it is not possible to take those kind of shots from the camera, are there any free editing softwares that allow this function? We'd love to hear from someone who knows it.

Online sites that can add color spots to black and white images:
    FotoFlexer
    http://fotoflexer.com/
    Pixlr Online image editor
    http://www.pixlr.com/
    LunaPic
    http://www.lunapic.com/

Or download programs to add color spots:
    Photofiltre
    http://photofiltre.free.fr/frames_en.htm
    Artweaver
    http://www.artweaver.de/home-en/
    Gimp ~image editor,
    http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html

If this doesn't help then I can't do anymore.
If you own an iPhone/iPad then it's much easier.
All you do is upload a photo and then use an app like color splash.

The D3100 can't do this. It is however available in the D5100 and other newer Nikons. It's called Selective Color w/c is part of the in-camera retouching.
