Help! How do I make this camera stay on longer? Why is the display off after 10 or less seconds? Why are the pictures blurred when I try to focus on a face?

You need to setup the time the camera goes into sleep mode. You can adjust in settings to the time you want (short, normal, long, own time). You have short on now so the camera goes to sleep fast.

If you're in low light the focusing won't work very well on basic kit lens. Lights will help and try different focus points. I use AF-s or AF-C for action. Go through the manual first! The kit lens is great for portrait if you have enough light.
