Flash not working

My Nikon D5100 does not work with either the internal or the attached f;ash. However, the yongnou iv flash can work with other cameras. What could be the problem?

It should operate a flash on the shoe if the flash is turned on and connected right.

Try putting the camera on manual mode (for a test the setting is not important) and put the flash on the shoe in its own manual mode if there is a choice. Make sure it's on, and the ready light is lit, and that if there is a clamp to tighten it on the shoe it is tight. If it does not fire then, I would suspect a camera problem.

A similar test should be possible with the built in flash. Put the camera on manual, and pop the flash up manually. Even if all the settings are wrong, it should flash, though there may be a delay if it's on TTL.
