Nikon D3100 Extreme Sound Distortion

For the first year or so that I had my D3100, the sound was fine for an entry level DSLR - it got the job done. Out of no where though, the sound now sounds like the static from a TV but it's extremely loud and I have tried toggling every setting within the D3100 sound options but nothing does the trick. Does anyone know if this is a common thing with the D3100? Anyone have any tips ot tricks?
