Lens for Fast Action Sports

I am looking to buy a lens for some football photgraphy and was looking at the Nikon 55-200mm VR DX AF-S lens as it is very well priced. Could you offer any advice on this lens or suggest another lens for sports?

    @steved - It depends on the time of day and how far back you'll be shooting from.

    If most of the games are outdoors during the day, then I'd go for the 55-200mm or the longer 55-300mm if you'll be shooting from the stands.

    If you'll be shooting later in the day (late afternoon/dusk) and at night, you'll need the 70-200mm f/2.8 which is quite pricey. Sigma and Tamron offer cheaper alternatives if you can't afford the Nikon version.
