How to Get a Black Background Indoors

I want to take a picture of our feet and have the background black. I have tried GIMP and all I can say is I have lost my religion there. I have a D5100 and the 18-55mm lens. This is my first "real" camera and I have limited knowledge. I also apologize if the question has been asked; I searched but I didn't see it addressed. Thanks in advance.
