Nikon 40mm For Portraits

Hey Moose, is the Nikon 40mm macro good for portraits? I know it's mainly for macro stuff, but I already have a 35mm f/1.8 but I want something sharper.

The 35mm doesn't give me the sharpness I would like even though, until now, it is my favorite lens. It's fast and the bokeh it gives me it's amazing.
About the 40mm, I think I should try this lens because of the price. That way I can also buy a sb700. The distance between me and the subject may vary the depth of field right? I want to know if it works just like the 35mm but with more sharpness (and a lower f/stop).
